🦐 Tell ASDA:

Stop mutilating Shrimp

ASDA still allow prawns to have their eyes cut off and to slowly suffocate in ice water - despite almost every other major UK supermarket banning these cruel practices.

We’ve contacted them, but only got vague responses. It seems they do not want to admit what’s going on.

Comment on social media and ask them: are they still supporting these cruel practices?

Is it common in the UK?

Most UK supermarkets such as Tesco, Iceland, Waitrose, and M&S have all committed to ending the practice.

However, ASDA, Aldi, and Lidl are some of the big-name UK supermarkets which have failed to ban the eyestalk mutilation of shrimp.

We think it’s time for them to do the same. Once consumers start demanding change, they will begin to listen 📢

What is eyestalk mutilation?

Eyestalk mutilation (also called eyestalk ablation) is the removal of one or both eyestalks from female shrimp and prawns, usually without anesthetic, to force them to produce more eggs.

This cruel practice:

  • Involves cutting, pinching, or burning off the eyestalk.

  • Causes clear signs of pain, such as tail flicking, rubbing, and flinching.

  • Damages their hormonal, immune, and metabolic systems.

  • Impairs movement, sensory perception, and survival rates.

  • Would never be accepted in vertebrate animals, yet is routine in shrimp farming.

But, what can I do about it?

Supermarkets only change when their customers demand it. If you speak, they will listen. Use our social media tool above, to comment on their social media and ask them to stop this cruel practice.
